Micro Liposuction

What is Micro Liposuction?

Micro cannular liposuction or also known as microlipo, is a minimally invasive fat-removal technique using very thin cannulas ranging 1–3 mm in diameter. This is performed under local anaesthetic as walk-in walkout procedure with quick recovery, making it the safest form of liposuction. Compared to traditional and other modern types of liposuctions, microlipo achieves much better finesse and aesthetic results with no visible scarring and minimal downtime allowing patients to return to their routine activities within 2-4 days depending upon the area of treatment.
It can be used for bigger as well as smaller pockets of fat making it an ideal technique for body contouring.

All body parts of any size can be treated but most suited for challenging areas like chin, arms, thighs & legs and breast.
Micro-cannulas, allowing a gentle, precise procedure with minimal downtime, low risk, and beautiful natural results.

Local anaesthesia: There’s no need for general anaesthesia.

How Does Micro Liposuction Work?

Micro-cannula: The instrument made of the small hollow stainless-steel tubes of 1-3 mm in diameter used for removing fat. The use of fine, precise instruments means less bruising, minimal discomfort, and a faster recovery.

Tumescent Anaesthesia: The tumescent liposuction approach typically uses large volumes of a diluted solution also containing lidocaine and epinephrine. The anaesthetic drug inside the solution numbs the whole area, causes fat cells to swell up and breakdown and also shrinks the blood capillaries in the area to minimise blood loss. This achieves a very effective and long-lasting anaesthesia of skin and subcutaneous tissue. Tumescent liposuction, when done correctly and in the right quantity, is proven to be the safest form of liposuction. This is because the anaesthetic solution shrinks the capillaries thereby reducing surgical blood loss. Complications arising from microlipo are thus extremely rare.

Micro-cannula Liposuction: The removal of fat deposits under the skin with minimal trauma using very small hollow stainless-steel tubes, called micro-cannulas. These micro-cannulas are inserted into 1mm adits/holes that are made into the skin and fat is aspirated with the assistance of a powerful vacuum pump. The area being treated will be infiltrated with local anaesthetic until the area is full and hard hence the name Tumescent Anaesthesia. It takes 30-60 minutes to take effect; the fat will then be ready to be aspirated. The treated area then be dressed in sterile super absorbent dressings and the compression garments. This is to control bleeding and to minimise the development of post-operative oedema and bruising.

Compression garments: The compression garments are required to be worn for 24 hours per day, typically for a minimum of 3 to 6 days. This enables the excess fluid to drain out, reduce bruising and expedite recovery.

The Science & Technology Behind It-

Micro liposuction is performed under tumescent local anaesthesia comprising of lidocaine adrenaline and normal saline. Tumescent anaesthesia not only numbs the treatment area, but it also gently softens and liquefies the fat with no trauma and minimises blood loss the following which fat is gently sucked out using very fine cannulas ranging from 1-3mm. This leads to no bleed or minimal bleeding, and better faster healing time post procedure and patients can return to their normal activities within a matter of two to four days.

The Treatment Process-

Well most procedure and patients can return to the normal activities within a matter of two to four days.

The treatment process starts with a face-to-face consultation where you should have opportunity to understand the outcomes, the risks involved and take all the information home to make an informed choice of decision. All the information is sent in detail in email.

Once ready to go ahead the day of the treatment starts with the admission process with the nurse, involving consent for the treatment, aftercare instructions, meeting the surgeon, taking photos, marking the treatment area and then proceeding with local anaesthetic and finishing the procedure with suctioning the fat out following the dressing and compression garments. You would be with us for 3-4 hours before discharge. All the post operative instructions are given verbally and in detailed writing. And a bag of extra dressings and a compression garment is given for next couple of days.

Next day there is always a lot of discharge from the tiny one-millimetre holes, so dressings are applied to absorb the fluid and then patients are required to wear compression garment to help facilitate the drainage for 3-6 days. You can stop wearing the compression garment as soon as the drainage stops.

Most patients can return to the normal activities within a matter of two to four days.

Small incisions are multiple 1-1.5 mm holes.

Procedure time: 3-4 hours. Same-day discharge with compression garments. Clear aftercare instruction and support is provided.

How Much Does It Cost?

Price from £4,500 per area.

Price dependent on the area of treatment, complexity, number of surgeries required and if I.V sedation is required or not.

Is it cheaper to go abroad than treating in UK?

It’s a complex issue. Yes, it’s a price-sensitive market, but it’s important to weigh what you pay against what you receive in return. We believe it’s a myth that treatment abroad is significantly cheaper but that’s no longer the case. When you factor in the cost of travel, accommodation, taking a family member along, and most importantly, the risks of being cared for in a non–English-speaking environment, the overall cost often equals or even exceeds that of treatment here.

From what we’ve heard from colleagues and patients, the surgery prices abroad are comparable, but you add the stress and uncertainty of travelling for medical care. Many procedures in countries such as Spain, Germany, or Turkey are also performed under general anaesthesia, which carries its own risks.

Ultimately, it comes down to individual choice — how much is saving a small amount of money really worth compared to your own safety? You can’t put a price on well-being, safety, and peace of mind. When liposuction goes wrong and it can, the consequences can be severe and even fatal. So, while everyone must make their own decision, these are crucial factors to consider.

Side Effects and Risks

Common temporary effects:

Swelling, bruising, tightness, numbness. These are expected due to the trauma caused by the fat removal from under the skin, typically improves in few days and gradually gets better over the 6 weeks. Pain and discomfort are minimal, can be managed by oral pain killers. Patients resume to normal activity in couple of days post-surgery.

Rare/Less common: infection – prophylaxis antibiotics are given before and after the procedure.

Uneven contours, pigmentation – Usually micro lipo provides precision at the curvy arears like legs, arms and chin. Tiny cannulas are easy to manipulate under the skin without any damage to get precise results.
As Swelling increases. The compression garments tend to get tighter and digs in the skin to make it uncomfortable. Option to opt for a comfortable but tight compression is give after 3-4 days.

We recommend our patients to follow aftercare instructions given and to contact the team directly for any concerns or questions post-surgery.

Results & Longevity

Results will be visible at 6 weeks and can take 3-6 months in some cases to see the final results. You can see how the final will be, next day when you take off your first dressing, before the swelling kicks in.

It is very difficult to regain fat in the treated areas as most fat cells are removed from the area, but results are also subject to maintenance by achieving a balanced diet and weight management. In case of future weight gain, untreated areas may show an increase in size.

Procedure is meant for big reduction and improvement to areas unresponsive to diet & exercise but never meant to achieve elusive perfection.

Micro Liposuction vs Other Treatments

“Micro Liposuction vs Fat Freezing: Which Works Better for You?”

Fat freeze is a cheaper and temporary option, but it is not ideal for fat removal. Fat freeze causes lot of fibrous tissues and lumpiness in the area, without any long-term results. It gets very difficult to break the fibrous tissue if you want to have a liposuction later. It is advisable to consult your doctor. Micro liposuction is a safer and permanent option for fat cell removal in the area of treatment.
